Vessel Marketing: A Needle in a Haystack
Marketing your business to prospects moving around on the global stage, was never going to be easy…
First there was the issue of knowing which vessels will arrive at port or OPL and when. Once this was achieved, the problem became a matter of not knowing how to get your message to the Master of the vessel. Succeed or fail, you could always try and get an order out of the technical managers, right?
There are thousands of companies involved in the industry for your business to serve, whilst they might all sound like potential customers, they are not. What should be focused on is who is managing the vessels that make use of the ports you serve, and contact them only. I’m sure from experience you would know that these companies are scattered all across the globe, even if you only serve 1 port.
This “Needle in a haystack” approach is exactly why small Ship Chandlers never manage to make it past the starting line, unless they “know someone”.
The Marketing Cycle
The current methods available to anyone seeking to promote their businesses to ships before arrival at Port, is to try and stay connected with lists acquired through lucky means not available to competitors. Once this hurdle was overcome, the next mission became to quickly check which vessels found had any contact information available. This could be through Googling, online database searches or even offline Excel Spreadsheet searches. Once this was ultimately finalized, email templates had to be drawn up with email addresses copied and pasted and sent off, by far the
quickest part of the whole show. Tomorrow its round 2…
The problem is that this method makes the whole marketing process tedious, repetitively boring and drawn out, almost making it so unbearable that it would in some companies be dropped as potentially fruitless. It also heavily depends on how great your online googling skills are, how accurate and big your own offline list of email addresses is, if you even have the time to spend googling stuff and many other factors that can derail your efforts (like another monthly salary to pay)
